Comments

A working demo that I can do on a phone showing the whole life-cycle would be great. (Download app, enter data, submit data, see results on a website)

Resource Commitments

We'll get whichever server we're using to do remote authentication and forms sync on user permissions.

Target Release Date

Released late October, 2008. Currently doing bug fixes and changes in response to needs in the field

Core Feature Set Needed

RFID support (definitely read... write too?). There are a lot of things that are project specific and will need to be changed

Resource Commitments

Might be able to do JavaRosa work, but not certain. Trying to build developer capacity.

AquaTest (Melissa Loudon, UCT)

Project Summary

The Aquatest project is a 4-year research project to develop a low-cost test for drinking water quality, as well as associated management systems. The project consortium is led by the University of Bristol, with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Other organisations include various universities and policy NGOs, as well as the World Health Organisation.

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town is working on the management systems side of the project, looking specifically at cellphone-based data collection and reporting systems. This includes systems to report and receive feedback on test results, as well as related systems for routine monitoring of small community drinking water supplies.

Target Release Date

An early pilot is planned for the end of January 2009. The project runs until 2011, by which time we hope to have completed pilot implementations in multiple provinces and, if, successful, handed over the system to local government for continuing operation.

Core Feature Set Needed

Essential: Fill out, store and retrieve basic forms Send forms via GPRS

Nice to have: Send forms via SMS Camera and audio questions

Potentially features we might develop: Review overview information for a series of forms (e.g. time-series, "value over time") Review graphs based on one or more forms Location functionality (GPS service?) JavaRosa-specific Xforms designer

Detailed Use Cases

A member of a remote community is designated the caretaker of the community borehole. This role entails conducting regular inspections and test the water using the Aquatest device, and reporting to the local authority responsible for water supply using a predesigned form on a mobile phone.

A traveling municipal water engineer conducts inspections of water supplies throughout the area of operation of the local authority. The inspections are recorded using structured forms on the inspector's mobile phone, where possible including detail such as photographs of problem areas, or audio recordings of problems reported by communities.

A community member wants to know whether their water is safe to drink, and what the trend in water quality has been over the past year. They ask the water supply caretaker, who accesses saved inspection data on his/her mobile phone to supply the community member with this information

Comments

Qualities that favor JavaRosa: open source, standards-based, actively developed, has all the essential features already, including storing forms.

Our development capacity is limited. The main priority for the first pilot, given that we have all the essential features already in JavaRosa, is likely to be on server-side development and implementation issues.
